As it’s been the case in all 70 editions—bar the inaugural one—the honor of welcoming some of the best collegiate prospects in the country falls to Mobile, Alabama.
Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert and his Oklahoma counterpart Jalen Hurts are among those hoping to bolster their profile ahead of the draft.
Earlier this week, NFL Media Analyst Daniel Jeremiah released his first mock draft of the year, projecting Herbert to be the selected with the fourteenth overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—the lowest of four quarterbacks to be picked in the first round.
The Ducks signal-caller finished the season with 3,471 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and just six interceptions. His height and strong arm made him one of the best quarterbacks in the FBS and a really intriguing prospect ahead of the draft.
Hurts, meanwhile, finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting to LSU star Joe Burrow after registering career-best figures in passing yards, rushing yards and touchdowns.
In his first season with Oklahoma since transferring from Alabama, Hurts finished with 3,851 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, adding 1,298 rushing yards and 20 scores on the ground.
While Herbert and Hurts headline the South Team, which is coached by Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, the North Team’s three quarterbacks—Washington State’s Anthony Gordon, Michigan’s Shea Patterson and Utah State’s Jordan Love—will attract plenty of interest.
“All three guys competed really well,” Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia, who coaches the North Team, told NFL.com.
“It’s certainly most important for the quarterbacks to learn all the verbiage, all the vernacular. They need to understand what everybody’s doing on offense and then try to get everyone lined up and ready to go. They’ve handled all that well.”
Meanwhile, Notre Dame wide receiver Chase Claypool, who finished with 1,037 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns this season, South Carolina Bryan Edwards and USC Michael Pittman are arguably the key wideouts.
Among edge rushers, Michigan’s Josh Uche and Utah Bradlee Anae will have plenty of eyes of them, as will Florida’s Jonathan Greenard, who led the SEC in sacks and tackles for loss with 9.5 and 15.5 respectively.
South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw and Oklahoma’s Neville Gallimore are considered almost unanimous first-round picks at the draft in April, while Wisconsin linebacker Zack Baun should also be taken in the first round.
