Murphy, an elementary school teacher, left school on Wednesday, January 12, to go jogging. Her body was later found that afternoon on the banks of a canal near Tullamore, a town in central Ireland, according to the Associated Press. She was laid to rest on Tuesday.

Bishop Tom Deenihan told mourners that the killing was a “depraved act of violence” that has united the country in grief, the AP reported.

Irish Premier Michael Martin and President Michael Higgins were in attendance at Murphy’s funeral.

A man in his 30s suspected of having a connection to Murphy’s death was admitted to a local hospital with injuries to his face and hands last Thursday, according to a report on the Irish Central news site. The hospital reported the man to police as his wounds could be defensive wounds sustained in the incident.

That individual has now been taken into custody and is being held at Tullamore Garda Station for questioning, according to Sky News.

He is not the first man questioned by police in connection to the incident.

According to Irish Central, police arrested a man in connection to the case an hour after Murphy’s body was found. Radu Floricel, 39, was walking home from a store when police approached him. He believed the arrest to be a prank and was held in custody from 5 p.m. last Wednesday until 11 p.m. on Thursday, when he was released by police.

Floricel believes he was incorrectly identified in a lineup due to him bearing a resemblance to the man believed to be Murphy’s killer, Irish Central added. CCTV footage shows Floricel at the Centra Store in Tullamore during Murphy’s attack, and his credit card history shows he did not leave until after the attack took place.

Ryan Casey, Murphy’s boyfriend, spoke at her funeral. “It is simply not possible to explain what Ashling meant to myself, her family, friends. All I’d like to say in this moment and time is that Ashling was our shining light. She loves her mum Kathleen, her father Ray, her big sister Amy and big brother Cathal and all her family and friends so much.

“She was always there, always willing to help anybody, anywhere, at any time, and always put herself last.”

Father Michael Meade, who spoke at Murphy’s service, said her parents, siblings and boyfriend had “been robbed of your most precious gift—a gift that gave only joy and love, fun and laughter to many beyond your family.”

A Facebook post from An Garda Siochana, Ireland’s national police service, asked for anybody with possible information on Murphy’s attack to come forward.
